Detailed Syllabus

Unit I: Sets and Functions (23 Marks)

  1. Sets
  • Sets and their representations: Empty set, Finite and Infinite sets, Equal sets.
  • Subsets, Subsets of real numbers (especially intervals with notations).
  • Universal set, Venn diagrams.
  • Operations: Union, Intersection, Difference, Complement of a set, Properties of complement.
  1. Relations & Functions
  • Ordered pairs, Cartesian product of sets, Number of elements in Cartesian product of two finite sets.
  • Cartesian product of reals (up to ( R \times R \times R )).
  • Relations: Definition, Pictorial diagrams, Domain, Co-domain, Range.
  • Functions: Special type of relation, Pictorial representation, Domain, Co-domain, Range.
  • Real-valued functions: Constant, Identity, Polynomial, Rational, Modulus, Signum, Exponential, Logarithmic, Greatest Integer functions (with graphs).
  • Operations on functions: Sum, Difference, Product, Quotient.
  1. Trigonometric Functions
  • Positive and negative angles, Measuring angles in radians and degrees, Conversion between measures.
  • Definition of trigonometric functions using the unit circle.

Identity:
sin²x + cos²x = 1 (for all x).

Signs, Domain, Range, and Graphs of trigonometric functions.

Compound angle formulas:
sin(x±y) = sinx cosy ± cosx siny,
cos(x±y) = cosx cosy ∓ sinx siny,
and their simple applications.

  • Deducing identities:

1. Sum and Difference Formulas

  • Linear inequalities, Algebraic solutions in one variable, Representation on the number line.
  1. Permutations and Combinations
  • Fundamental principle of counting, Factorial ( n ) (i.e., ( n! )).
  • Derivation of formulas: ( ^nP_r ), ( ^nC_r ), their connections, and simple applications.
  1. Binomial Theorem
  • Historical perspective, Statement and proof for positive integral indices.
  • Pascal’s triangle, Simple applications.
  1. Sequence and Series
  • Sequences and series, Arithmetic Mean (A.M.).
  • Geometric Progression (G.P.): General term, Sum of ( n ) terms, Infinite G.P. and its sum, Geometric Mean (G.M.).
  • Relation between A.M. and G.M.

Unit III: Coordinate Geometry (12 Marks)

  1. Straight Lines
  • Brief recall of 2D geometry from earlier classes.
  • Slope of a line, Angle between two lines.
  • Forms of line equations: Parallel to axes, Point-slope, Slope-intercept, Two-point, Intercept form.
  • Distance of a point from a line.
  1. Conic Sections
  • Sections of a cone: Circles, Ellipse, Parabola, Hyperbola, Degenerate cases (point, straight line, pair of intersecting lines).
  • Standard equations and simple properties of Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola, Circle.
  1. Introduction to Three-dimensional Geometry
  • Coordinate axes and planes in 3D.
  • Coordinates of a point, Distance between two points.

Unit IV: Calculus (8 Marks)

  1. Limits and Derivatives
  • Derivative as rate of change (distance function and geometrically).
  • Intuitive idea of limit.
  • Limits of polynomials, rational, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  • Definition of derivative, Relation to slope of tangent.
  • Derivatives of sum, difference, product, and quotient of polynomial and trigonometric functions.

Unit V: Statistics and Probability (12 Marks)

  1. Statistics
  • Measures of dispersion: Range, Mean deviation, Variance, Standard deviation (for ungrouped/grouped data).
  1. Probability
  • Events: Occurrence, ‘Not’, ‘And’, ‘Or’ events, Exhaustive events, Mutually exclusive events.
  • Axiomatic (set-theoretic) probability, Connections with earlier theories.
  • Probability of an event, Probability of ‘Not’, ‘And’, and ‘Or’ events.
